How to Activate Alexa Follow-up Mode

When you activate Follow-up Mode, you allow Alexa to “hear” one command, follow it, then wait five seconds to “listen” for another command. While it’s listening, the blue light indicator on your device remains lit.

Follow these instructions to activate Follow-up Mode:

That’s it! Now you can issue multiple commands to Alexa, only using the wake word once.

In the upper-left corner, tap the hamburger icon.

From the menu, select Alexa Devices. (On the iOS app, choose Settings.)

Select the device on which you want to enable Follow-up Mode.

Scroll down and tap Follow-up Mode.

Tap the Follow-up Mode slider into the on position. (On the iOS app, the slider is in the previous menu.)

What Follow-Up Mode Does For You

For example, say it’s bedtime, and you want Alexa to help you with several evening tasks: learning about tomorrow’s weather, setting an alarm, and playing soothing music. Without Follow-up Mode activated, the interaction goes like this:

You: Alexa, what’s tomorrow’s weather report?

Alexa: Tomorrow there will be lots of clouds with a high of 79 degrees and a low of 55 degrees.

You: Alexa, set an alarm for 6:00 AM

Alexa: Alarm set for 6:00 AM tomorrow.

You: Alexa, play ambient music.

With Follow-up Mode activated, you can leave out the “Alexa” before the second and third commands. You can stop Follow-up Mode any time Alexa is “listening” by saying words like, “Thanks,” or “Stop.”
